The song “Linden Lea” became the first of his works to appear in print, published in the magazine The Vocalist in April 1902 and then as separate sheet music.

William Barnes (22 February 1801 – 7 October 1886) was an English writer, poet, Church of England priest, and philologist. He wrote over 800 poems and much other work.
