Going Home” is a spiritual-like song based on the theme from the Largo of Symphony No. 9 in E minor by Antonín Dvořák. The song was adapted from the Largo by Dvorak’s  pupil William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922.

The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World”, Op. 95, B. 178, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies.

Fisher describes his song as – “a moving expression of that nostalgia of the soul all human beings feel.”

It is an appropriate song for a funeral or any other sombre occasion.
